The Duck

After making the big poppy quilt I loved the precise piecing process of Ann Shaw quilt patterns. I picked this duck to make next and it's cheers me up when I see it on the wall. I love the colors too.

I used all batiks to give it a natural look. Here are all of the individual pieces cut before being sewed. They are all pinned on a foam board so that they stay grouped correctly. This is a great way to adjust any fabric color choices before sewing also.
Precision pinning is required to assure each piece lines up to matching marks.
Here is the back after all sewing is done and before the freezer paper is removed.
Yeah everything is finally pieced and ready for machine quilting.
Here is a details of the machine quilting.

After two big pictorial quilts in a row - now I'm ready to makes something simple or smaller!

Pink Poppy

At last I finished this large poppy art quilt. It makes a very nice wall art piece.
It's all pieced and then lots of machine quilting. This is from a class I took from Ann Shaw through the Quilters Anonymous Quilt Guild. At first I thought wow this is going to be a lot of work drafting each piece from the template and cutting precisely and sewing precisely but it went very smooth. She has great step by step instructions to help make it a little easier. It does require patience and precision sewing.
Here are some details of the machine quilting with some thread blending.

This quilt is 40" x 33". Now I'm making a duck with this same pieced method.

I Love Tulips Art Quilt

I Love Tulips is a tiny art quilt that I started making after thinking about some of my favorite flowers...one of which are tulips. I know is Spring as soon as they sprout up through the ground.

I used different techniques and materials. For the stems I used velvet ribbon, tiny patchwork and a sheer fabric for the tulips. Then I had some vintage lace that I hand dyed and painted. The heart is done with fabric paint. Then I did some machine embroidery and hand stitching.
For the boarder I wanted something different so stitched on ribbon with a zig zag stitch. It was fun to experiment and see how it all came together.

Scrappy Little Leaves

This is a scrappy little wall quilt of several different kinds of leaves finished just in time for Fall! This was inspired by the Scrappy Little House quilt I made for a travel project. So used the same idea with leaves by starting with 5" charm pack for backing squares and 5" batting squares. While on vacation I hand quilted them with embroidery floss. Here they are before embellishing.
I then added a backing fabric, and sewed 1/2" strips through all layers to hold the layers together.
I love how the variety of colors just meld together so well.

Here are the leaf sketches I made and then traced them on the fabrics.
Here is my little sewing buddy Olive - all happy to be my office chair while I'm sewing at my machine! She is always by my side.
Thank you for following my blog! Happy Fall to All :)

That's How I Roll Art Quilt

This was for the Quilters Anonymous Quilt Guild Challenge Quilt. It had to be 75% black, white, grays, and 25% one fabric of any color. And had to have one or more words. This is mine:

I really like how this turned out. There were so many beautiful quilts in the show from very talented quilter guild members.

Scrappy Little Houses - Quilt In Progress

These scrappy little houses are all set for a traveling project to add hand quilting and embellishments. I pulled bits of fabrics left over from projects and just cut some shapes. They are stitched to cotton batting without any backing yet. I plan on sewing them on backing later.

Here is a picture of the back of them showing they are machine sewn down to hold in place for traveling. I kind of like these too.

Hummingbird Art Quilt

This little art quilt started with the 4 prairie points in the middle that I put on the purple background for contrast. They looked like mountains to me so then I started building it from there. The border is crazy quilt blocks or "made fabric".

It is machine quilted with some hand quilting.

Size is 18" x 24"

Pinwheel Poppy Sprouts

Dreaming about Spring made me think of red pinwheels. I saw my make believe flowers coming out of sprout leaves. Poppies generally grow in big groups from all their seeds so this is my interpretation of seeing a field of poppies.

I added hand stitchery which I love for texture. This was a great project while traveling on vacation.
 Size 10" x 10"
